The Stone and Its Discovery

In July 1799, soldiers in Napoleon's Egyptian expedition were strengthening the defences of Fort Julien at Rashid — a town on the western branch of the Nile Delta known to Europeans as Rosetta — when they uncovered a dark stone slab inscribed with three distinct scripts. The officer in charge, Lieutenant Pierre-François Bouchard, recognised that a text inscribed in three different systems on a single stone might offer a key to deciphering one of them. The stone was transferred to scholars attached to the expedition; copies were circulated; and when the French surrendered Egypt to British forces in 1801, the stone itself was transferred to British custody under the terms of the Capitulation of Alexandria. It has been in the British Museum since 1802.

The Rosetta Stone is a priestly decree, issued in 196 BC by the priests of Memphis on behalf of the young Ptolemaic king Ptolemy V Epiphanes. It records the benefits the king has conferred on the temples and priesthood, and concludes with the instruction that the decree be inscribed in three scripts: hieroglyphic, the formal script of religious and monumental texts; Demotic, the everyday cursive script of administrative Egypt; and Greek, the language of the Ptolemaic court and administration. The decree itself is of modest historical interest. The stone's significance lies entirely in the fact that it says the same thing three ways — and that one of those ways was, in 1799, a language scholars could already read.

The Competing Race

The task of using the Greek text to decode the hieroglyphics attracted multiple scholars across Europe in the first two decades of the 19th century. The initial optimism — if the languages matched, surely decipherment would be rapid — ran into the fundamental difficulty that hieroglyphics were not, as most scholars assumed, a purely symbolic script in which each sign represented an idea rather than a sound. This assumption, derived largely from classical writers and from the philosophical prestige attached to the idea of a 'sacred writing' that conveyed meaning directly to the mind, sent early researchers down unproductive paths.

The British polymath Thomas Young made several crucial advances between 1814 and 1819. He identified the oval rings — cartouches — in the hieroglyphic text as enclosing royal names, and demonstrated that the signs within the cartouche corresponding to the Greek name Ptolemy represented phonetic values rather than symbolic meanings. He correctly identified about half of the phonetic signs in the name. Young, however, continued to believe that phonetic signs were used only for foreign names, not for native Egyptian words — a limiting assumption that prevented him from taking the next step.

Jean-François Champollion, a French linguist and Orientalist who had been studying Egyptian texts since childhood, possessed two advantages Young lacked. He had a deep knowledge of Coptic, the latest stage of the Egyptian language written in a modified Greek alphabet and still used in the liturgy of the Egyptian Christian church. And he understood, from his study of multiple hieroglyphic texts, that the script was a mixed system — partly phonetic, partly logographic — capable of representing the sounds of the Egyptian language directly.

The Breakthrough of September 1822

On 14 September 1822, working with a copy of inscriptions from the temple at Abu Simbel that included the cartouche of a pharaoh whose Greek name he suspected was Ramesses, Champollion recognised that the hieroglyphic signs inside the cartouche spelled out, phonetically, the consonants of the Egyptian name Ra-ms-ss. The middle sign was a reed mat, which he could identify as ms from Coptic. The sun disk at the beginning corresponded to Ra, the sun god. And the sign at the end, repeated, corresponded to s. The name was readable. The system was phonetic, and it recorded actual Egyptian speech.

He rushed to the Institut de France where his brother worked and announced, in some accounts dramatically, that the decipherment was achieved — then reportedly fainted from excitement. His formal presentation to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres on 27 September 1822, in which he outlined a systematic account of how hieroglyphics worked, is taken as the founding moment of Egyptology as a reading discipline. Within a few years, using Egyptian texts of known content to verify his identifications, Champollion had decoded enough of the system to read a wide range of ancient Egyptian texts.

What Decipherment Revealed

The consequences of the decipherment were enormous. Before Champollion, ancient Egypt was known primarily through Greek and Roman accounts — accounts often filtered through a particular fascination with Egypt's religious mysteries and an assumption of impenetrable symbolic depth. After the decipherment, Egyptologists could read thousands of texts that the ancient Egyptians had left about themselves: administrative records, love poetry, medical treatises, funerary spells, historical annals, religious hymns, and personal letters. The gap between what outsiders had imagined and what Egyptians had actually written proved illuminating in ways no one had anticipated.

The ancient Egyptians, it emerged from their own texts, worried about their health, argued with their employers, fell in love, complained about the noise in the streets, and described their military victories in language that was partly accurate and partly propaganda. The New Kingdom pharaoh Ramesses II's account of the Battle of Kadesh, fought against the Hittites around 1274 BC, was the first historical battle for which multiple independent accounts survived — and comparing the Egyptian and Hittite records showed both sides claiming victory in a battle that had ended in a negotiated treaty.

Other Decipherments

The Rosetta Stone's success inspired the hunt for parallel texts in other dead script systems. The decipherment of cuneiform, the wedge-shaped script of Mesopotamia, proceeded in parallel through the 19th century, with the Behistun Inscription in Iran — a trilingual decree of Darius I in Old Persian, Elamite, and Babylonian, carved high on a cliff face — playing a role analogous to the Rosetta Stone. Henry Rawlinson's dangerous cliff-climbing expeditions to copy the text in the 1840s, combined with the work of Edward Hincks and others, eventually unlocked Sumerian, Akkadian, and the full range of cuneiform literature.

Linear B, the script used in Mycenaean Greece for administrative records, was deciphered in 1952 by Michael Ventris, an architect with no formal academic training in classics. His insight — that the underlying language was an archaic form of Greek — was resisted initially by established scholars but proved overwhelmingly correct, adding several centuries to the documented history of the Greek language. Linear A, the earlier Minoan script, remains undeciphered.

The Stone's Contested Status

The Rosetta Stone has been in the British Museum since 1802, making it one of the institution's most visited objects. Egypt has periodically requested its return, and the debate about its custodianship forms part of the wider conversation about colonial-era acquisitions held by Western museums. The stone was taken under the terms of a military capitulation, not purchased or donated, a provenance that raises questions about the legitimacy of its retention.

Whatever its institutional fate, the Rosetta Stone represents one of the most consequential single objects in the history of knowledge — the lever that opened three thousand years of Egyptian writing to human understanding.
