Megalithic Monuments
Stone as a Medium of Memory
Megalithic monuments — structures built from large, often undressed stones — appear across an enormous arc of the world, from Atlantic Europe to South Asia, from sub-Saharan Africa to East Asia. The word itself comes from the Greek for 'great stone', and the scale is often the first thing that arrests attention: stones weighing tens of tonnes, moved and erected without metal tools, wheeled vehicles or draft animals capable of carrying such loads. Understanding how prehistoric communities achieved this is part of what makes megaliths endlessly compelling. Understanding why is harder, and remains genuinely contested.
In Europe, the megalithic tradition spans roughly 4500 to 1500 BC, with its most intense phase between about 4000 and 2500 BC — the Neolithic period, before the widespread adoption of bronze. The communities that built these monuments were farmers, herders and skilled craftspeople, living in villages that left few physical traces compared to the enormous investments they made in stone construction. The megaliths are often the most durable evidence of entire societies, surviving long after the houses, fields and cemeteries of ordinary life have vanished.
The Carnac Alignments
The Carnac alignments in Brittany, northwest France, represent the largest concentration of standing stones in the world. Thousands of menhirs — upright standing stones — are arranged in multiple parallel rows running for several kilometres across the landscape around the town of Carnac. The main alignment groups — Menec, Kermario and Kerlescan — together comprise over three thousand surviving stones, and the original number was certainly higher; many have been removed over the centuries for building material or roads.
The alignments were erected during the Neolithic period, roughly between 4500 and 2500 BC, though the precise chronology of individual rows is difficult to establish. Some menhirs are small, less than a metre high; others exceed four metres. The stones are local granite and schist, quarried from outcrops within a few kilometres. The spacing within rows and between rows is broadly regular, suggesting deliberate planning, but the overall layout and purpose remain debated. Associated with the alignments are megalithic tombs — passage graves covered by cairns and earth mounds — suggesting that the landscape as a whole served ritual and commemorative functions connected to the dead.
Passage Graves and Dolmens
Across Atlantic Europe, from Portugal and Spain through France, the British Isles and into Scandinavia, Neolithic communities built chambered tombs from large stone slabs. The simplest form — a few upright stones supporting a single horizontal capstone, covered by an earth mound now usually eroded away — is called a dolmen. They appear in their thousands across Brittany, Ireland, Wales, southwest England and Denmark.
More elaborate are the passage graves: a stone-lined corridor leading to one or more chambers, covered by a substantial circular mound. Newgrange in County Meath, Ireland, built around 3200 BC and a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the Brú na Bóinne complex, is the finest example. The mound is roughly 85 metres in diameter and covers a passage and cruciform chamber whose corbelled roof — stones laid in overlapping courses to close the vault — has kept the interior dry for five millennia. At the winter solstice, sunlight enters through a specially constructed 'roof box' above the entrance and illuminates the floor of the inner chamber for a period of around 17 minutes. Whatever the full range of functions Newgrange served, its builders clearly understood solar geometry and invested enormous effort in creating this alignment.
In Malta, the Neolithic temple tradition produced structures of comparable sophistication but different form: free-standing above-ground buildings of colossal stone blocks, their interiors divided into apse-like chambers arranged in trefoil plans. The temples at Ġgantija on Gozo, dating to around 3600–2500 BC, are among the oldest free-standing stone buildings in the world, predating Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Giza.
Stonehenge and Avebury
Stonehenge in Wiltshire is the most famous megalithic monument in the world, and also the most complex. The structure as it survives today represents the culmination of a building process that unfolded over roughly 1,500 years, from around 3000 to 1500 BC. The earliest phase was a circular earthwork enclosure with a timber structure inside. The famous standing stones came later, in several distinct stages.
The bluestones — smaller igneous rocks whose distinctive chemical signature identifies their source in the Preseli Hills of southwest Wales, roughly 250 kilometres away — were first erected at Stonehenge around 2500 BC. The mechanics of their transport remain debated: by sea around the Welsh and English coasts, by glacial movement in a previous ice age, or by overland sledging, each hypothesis carries different evidential weight. The larger sarsen stones, local sandstone quarried from Marlborough Downs about 25 kilometres to the north, were erected around 2500–2300 BC. The familiar sight of Stonehenge — lintelled trilithons in the inner horseshoe and a continuous outer ring of uprights connected by lintels — belongs to this phase.
Avebury, also in Wiltshire and part of the same UNESCO World Heritage Site as Stonehenge, is in some respects more impressive in scale. Its henge — a circular bank and ditch — encloses roughly 28 hectares and contains the largest stone circle in the world, with two smaller circles inside it. The village of Avebury has been built within the monument; houses and a pub sit among and between the standing stones.
Megalithic Traditions Beyond Europe
Stone monuments appear in comparable forms far beyond the European Atlantic facade. In sub-Saharan Africa, the monumental stelae of Aksum in Ethiopia, carved from single granite blocks in the Aksumite period around the 1st to 7th centuries AD, represent a later tradition of megalithic commemoration with different social roots. In Ethiopia's Gurage region, the Tiya stele field — upright carved stones marking burial sites — received UNESCO designation in 1980.
In Asia, the dolmen tradition extended from the Korean Peninsula into parts of Japan and northeast China. Korean dolmens, particularly concentrated in the North and South Jeolla provinces of the southern peninsula, were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The Gochang dolmen site preserves over 400 examples. The tradition there dates to roughly 1000–300 BC.
In India, megalithic tombs and monument complexes appear across the Deccan Plateau, associated with Iron Age communities from roughly 1000 BC into the early centuries AD. These include cist graves, dolmenoid structures, stone circles and rows of standing stones, some associated with extraordinary quantities of iron tools and weapons.
The Question of Purpose
Across all these traditions, the question of what megaliths were for resists simple answers. Mortuary function — marking, housing or commemorating the dead — is clearly central to many monuments. Alignment with astronomical events (solstices, equinoxes, lunar standstills) is demonstrably intentional at some sites and plausible at others, suggesting roles in calendrical or ceremonial life. Territorial marking, the demonstration of community labour capacity, and the creation of places for assembly and ritual have all been proposed.
The honest answer is probably that different monuments served different combinations of purposes, and that purposes changed over the long periods during which many were in use. Stonehenge's centre was already around 500 years old when the sarsen trilithons were erected. Each generation of builders inherited and reinterpreted a place already dense with accumulated meaning.
