Ancient Trade Routes
Networks Before Nations
The idea that civilisations developed in isolation — that ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and China each evolved independently, sealed off from one another by geography — was always more myth than reality. The archaeological evidence for long-distance exchange is ancient and pervasive. Lapis lazuli from Badakhshan in modern Afghanistan appears in burial goods at Ur in Mesopotamia as early as the 3rd millennium BC. Tin from Anatolia or perhaps Cornwall alloyed with copper from Cyprus to produce the bronze that gave an entire age its name. Obsidian from volcanic islands in the Aegean reached the Greek mainland before the Neolithic period had ended.
Long-distance trade routes were not inventions of the classical era. They are as old as the desire to acquire materials unavailable locally — and they shaped every civilisation they touched.
The Silk Road: A Network, Not a Road
The term 'Silk Road' was coined by the German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen in 1877, and it is misleading in almost every particular. There was no single road. There was an overlapping network of tracks, mountain passes, river valleys, and desert crossings stretching from China to the Mediterranean and branching at dozens of points. Merchants rarely if ever travelled the entire distance; goods passed through chains of intermediaries, each segment of the journey handled by specialists in the local terrain.
The network was active from at least the 2nd century BC, when the Han dynasty emperor Wudi sent his envoy Zhang Qian westward to forge alliances against the Xiongnu nomads and returned instead with intelligence about the rich cities of Central Asia and the possibility of trade. Within a generation, Chinese silk was reaching Parthian Iran and Roman Syria. Roman gold coins have been found in burial contexts in Han dynasty China; Chinese lacquerwork has been excavated at Begram in Afghanistan, the site of a Kushan royal treasury.
The cities of Central Asia that grew rich on the traffic — Samarkand, Bukhara, Merv, Balkh, Dunhuang — are today among the most significant archaeological sites on the route. Samarkand's Afrasiyab quarter, the pre-Mongol city, preserves wall paintings from a 7th-century palace showing ambassadors arriving from China, India, Korea, and Byzantium, each identifiable by their dress and gifts. It is a visual record of the Silk Road as a living diplomatic and commercial system.
The Incense Route and Arabia Felix
While silk dominated the overland routes of Central Asia, a different commodity drove the trade of Arabia. Frankincense and myrrh — aromatic resins tapped from trees growing in modern Oman, Yemen, and Somalia — were consumed in enormous quantities across the ancient world for religious ritual, embalming, and medicine. Roman authors complained about the gold draining out of the empire to pay for eastern luxuries, and incense was high on the list.
The Nabataean Arabs of modern Jordan and the Negev controlled the main land route from the incense-producing regions to the Mediterranean markets of Gaza and Alexandria from roughly the 4th century BC until their annexation by Rome in 106 AD. The Nabataean capital at Petra was the great entrepot: its rock-cut architecture, elaborate hydraulic systems, and cosmopolitan material culture reflect the wealth generated by controlling this choke point.
The incense route's desert staging posts — Oboda, Mampsis (Mamshit), Haluza, Shivta — are preserved in the Negev and collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Each was a fortified station with water cisterns, caravan inns, and temples, sustaining the traffic across an otherwise waterless landscape.
The southern end of the route was controlled by the kingdoms of Arabia Felix — a classical term for the productive, settled south of the Arabian peninsula. The Sabaean kingdom, centred on Marib in modern Yemen, was fabulously wealthy on the incense trade. Marib's great dam, originally built around the 8th century BC and repeatedly rebuilt over the following millennium, irrigated the surrounding agricultural land; the Ma'rib dam's final collapse in the 6th century AD is mentioned in the Quran as a divine punishment and marks the end of classical South Arabian civilisation.
Mediterranean Sea Routes and Phoenician Commerce
Long before Rome dominated the Mediterranean, Phoenician traders from the cities of the Levantine coast — Tyre, Sidon, Byblos, Arwad — were operating a network of trading posts and colonies stretching from Cyprus to Spain. By the 9th and 8th centuries BC, Phoenicians had established colonies at Carthage (814 BC by tradition), Utica, and numerous points along the North African coast, in Sardinia, in Sicily, and at Gadir (modern Cadiz) on the Atlantic coast of Iberia.
What the Phoenicians traded is clear from archaeological finds: purple dye extracted from the Murex sea-snail (Tyre's famous product, the most expensive textile dye in the ancient world), fine glassware, carved ivory, metal goods, and cedar timber from the Lebanese mountains — sold to Egypt and Mesopotamia, which lacked large trees. Phoenician ships were the common carriers of the eastern Mediterranean economy, and their success drove both the Greeks and, later, the Romans to compete for control of the same sea lanes.
The Uluburun shipwreck, found off the Turkish coast near Kas and excavated in the 1980s and 1990s, provides the most detailed single snapshot of Late Bronze Age Mediterranean trade. The ship, sunk around 1300 BC, carried copper ingots from Cyprus, tin ingots probably from Anatolia or Iran, glass ingots from Egypt, ebony from sub-Saharan Africa, hippopotamus ivory, Canaanite amphorae, a gold scarab bearing the name of Nefertiti, Mycenaean pottery, Cypriot pottery, and Egyptian objects. The cargo came from at least ten different cultures. Whatever the merchant's home port, his business connected the whole eastern Mediterranean world.
Indian Ocean Trade: Monsoon Merchants
The systematic exploitation of the Indian Ocean monsoon for trade purposes appears to have been understood by Arab and Indian sailors from an early date, but the earliest direct Roman engagement with the system is documented from the 1st century BC onward. A Greek sailor named Hippalos is credited (probably incorrectly) with 'discovering' the monsoon, but Roman merchants were certainly sailing directly from Red Sea ports to the Malabar coast of India by the time the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea was written, around the 1st century AD.
The Periplus describes port after port — Berenike, Myos Hormos, Adulis in modern Eritrea, Muza in Yemen, Barygaza (modern Bharuch) in Gujarat, Muziris on the Malabar coast — and catalogues the goods exchanged at each. Roman finds at Arikamedu near Pondicherry in southern India include Italian amphorae and Arretine fine ware. Indian finds in Roman contexts include the pepper recovered at Berenike, textiles, and Buddhist ivories.
The Malay peninsula and the maritime Southeast Asian world fed goods from China into this network through entrepots like Oc Eo in the Mekong Delta, a site of the Funan kingdom. Roman and Kushano-Sasanian coins have been found at Oc Eo; Chinese bronze mirrors reached the same site from the other direction.
Trans-Saharan and Sub-Saharan Routes
North Africa was connected to sub-Saharan Africa by trans-Saharan caravan routes long before the camel became the dominant pack animal around the 3rd century AD. The Garamantes of the Fezzan region in modern Libya built an extraordinary infrastructure of underground irrigation channels (foggaras) that supported the oasis cities of their territory and administered the northward flow of gold, ivory, slaves, and ostrich feathers.
Roman goods reached sub-Saharan West Africa; West African gold eventually reached the Mediterranean via routes that sustained the medieval kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai long after Rome had fallen.
