Marine Archaeology and Shipwrecks: Excavating the Past from the Seabed
The Accidental Archive
A ship that sinks with its cargo intact is a time capsule in a way that no land site can match. On land, settlements accumulate layer by layer over centuries; objects are reused, recycled, and moved. A shipwreck, by contrast, represents a single moment: the cargo, tools, personal possessions, and food stores of a vessel at a specific point in time, deposited in one event and preserved beneath a protective layer of sediment. The organic materials that vanish from most land sites — wood, leather, rope, foodstuffs, textiles — survive in the cold, oxygen-poor conditions of the deep seabed or in the anaerobic muds of harbour floors. This makes marine archaeology uniquely capable of recovering aspects of the ancient world that are otherwise lost.
The challenge is access. Underwater excavation requires specialist training, equipment, and time. Until the development of self-contained underwater breathing apparatus in the 1940s and the pioneering work of marine archaeologists like Honor Frost and George Bass in the 1960s, systematic excavation of ancient shipwrecks was barely possible. Most wrecks known before that period had been looted rather than excavated, their cargoes scooped up by sponge divers or salvage operations with no recording of context. The establishment of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology in 1972 and the development of rigorous underwater excavation methodology transformed the field.
Bronze Age Wrecks: Uluburun and Cape Gelidonya
The two most important Bronze Age shipwrecks yet found both lie off the southern Turkish coast, and together they have transformed our understanding of late Bronze Age trade networks. Cape Gelidonya, excavated by George Bass in 1960 in the first systematic underwater excavation of a Bronze Age wreck, produced a Syro-Palestinian merchant vessel of around 1200 BC carrying copper and tin ingots, bronze scrap, tools, weights, and personal possessions. The weight sets matched systems used in Syria and Canaan, and the merchant appears to have been a Syro-Palestinian trader rather than the Mycenaean or Minoan merchant that the dominant model of the period might have predicted.
Uluburun, found in 1982 near Bodrum and excavated by Cemal Pulak over eleven seasons from 1984 to 1994, is the richest Bronze Age shipwreck ever found. The vessel, dated by dendrochronology and radiocarbon to around 1305–1280 BC, carried a cargo of extraordinary variety: ten tonnes of copper ingots in the distinctive 'oxhide' shape, one tonne of tin ingots, glass ingots in cobalt blue, turquoise, and lavender, ebony logs from sub-Saharan Africa, hippo ivory, elephant ivory, tortoiseshell, Canaanite amphorae filled with terebinth resin, Cypriot pottery, Egyptian scarabs and jewellery, a gold scarab bearing the name of Nefertiti, a gold chalice, two writing boards (the earliest known), and the personal belongings of what appear to have been Mycenaean or Cypriot passengers. The diversity of the cargo mirrors exactly the gift-exchange assemblages described in the Amarna letters, and the wreck provides physical evidence for the long-distance trade networks that connected Egypt, the Levant, Cyprus, and the Aegean in the late Bronze Age.
Classical and Hellenistic Wrecks
The Mediterranean seabed holds hundreds of Greek and Roman shipwrecks, most of them cargo vessels transporting amphorae of wine, olive oil, and fish sauce — the bulk commodities that fuelled the ancient economy. Systematic mapping of wreck distributions has allowed archaeologists to trace trade routes and to identify production centres by matching the characteristic shapes and clay fabrics of amphorae to known kiln sites. The Grand Congloué wrecks off Marseille, excavated in the 1950s under the supervision of Jacques-Yves Cousteau (though with limited archaeological control by modern standards), produced Dressel 1 wine amphorae from Italy and Campanian black-glaze pottery, illustrating the westward flow of Italian wine in the 2nd–1st centuries BC.
The Antikythera wreck, found by sponge divers in 1900 off the Greek island of Antikythera in the southern Aegean, produced not only bronze and marble statuary and luxury goods but the extraordinary Antikythera Mechanism — a bronze geared device of astonishing complexity, now dated to around 60–70 BC, capable of predicting astronomical phenomena including planetary positions, lunar phases, and eclipses. Over a hundred years of study, accelerated by new X-ray and CT imaging, has revealed a mechanism of roughly 37 interlocking bronze gears encoding the Metonic cycle, the Saros cycle, and the Callippic cycle — a level of mechanical complexity not matched in the surviving record until medieval astronomical clocks. Nothing in the ancient textual tradition prepares us for this device; without the wreck, we would not know it existed.
Roman-Period Wrecks and the Madrague de Giens
The Madrague de Giens wreck off the Provençal coast of France, excavated between 1972 and 1982 by a team from the University of Aix-en-Provence, is the largest Roman merchant vessel yet excavated. The ship, dated to around 75–60 BC, was roughly 40 metres long and carried a cargo of approximately 6,000 to 7,000 Dressel 1 wine amphorae from the Campanian region of Italy — an estimated 250–300 tonnes of wine. Beneath the main cargo were secondary amphorae of fish products and black-glaze tableware, and the ship's hull timbers were preserved in extraordinary condition, allowing detailed reconstruction of its construction methods. The wreck is one of the primary sources for understanding the size, construction, and cargo capacity of Roman merchant shipping.
Sunken Harbours and Submerged Landscapes
Marine archaeology extends beyond shipwrecks to encompass submerged harbours, coastal settlements, and landscapes inundated by sea-level rise. The ancient harbour of Caesarea Maritima in Israel, built by Herod the Great around 22–10 BC as a marvel of Roman engineering, was the first large harbour constructed in the open sea without a natural bay, using hydraulic concrete — a Roman innovation using pozzolana volcanic ash — that hardened underwater. Excavation of the submerged harbour structures by the Caesarea Ancient Harbour Excavation Project has revealed the original layout of the outer moles, inner harbour basins, lighthouse foundations, and warehouses.
In the Aegean, the harbours and town of the Bronze Age settlement at Pavlopetri off the coast of Laconia in southern Greece — submerged to a depth of about three to four metres — were first surveyed in 1967 and resurveyed in detail from 2009 onwards using high-resolution multibeam sonar and photogrammetric mapping. The site preserves the street plan, building foundations, and ceramics of a town occupied from the Final Neolithic through to the Late Bronze Age, giving an unusually complete picture of an Aegean coastal community.
The Vasa and Northern Europe
Cold, low-salinity waters like those of the Baltic Sea preserve organic materials with exceptional fidelity. The Swedish warship Vasa, which capsized and sank on her maiden voyage in Stockholm harbour in 1628, was raised in 1961 and is now preserved in the Vasamuseet in Stockholm — one of the most visited museums in Scandinavia. The Vasa is outside the ancient period, but the principles it illustrates apply equally to Bronze Age boats: the cold, near-anoxic Baltic waters prevented the shipworm Teredo navalis (which destroys organic material in warmer, saltier seas) from consuming the hull, and the ship's entire fabric — including carved decoration, guns, ropes, sailcloth, and the personal possessions of its crew — survived. The bronze objects, iron fittings, and lead ballast are dated by the wreck event itself to exactly 1628.
For genuinely ancient Baltic wrecks, the Hjortspring boat found in a bog on the Danish island of Als in 1921 — dated to around 350–300 BC and the oldest plank-built boat found in Scandinavia — demonstrates the same preservation potential.
