Greek Temple Architecture
The Temple as House of the God
A Greek temple was not a congregation hall. It was the earthly home of a deity's cult statue, a sacred enclosure where priests performed rituals on behalf of the community, and a visible expression of civic identity and religious devotion. The worshippers gathered outside, around the altar set before the temple's entrance. The interior — the naos or cella — was accessible primarily to priests, and contained the cult image, which could be a simple wooden xoanon (an archaic idol) or a colossal chryselephantine (gold and ivory) statue such as Pheidias's Athena Parthenos, which stood roughly 12 metres high inside the Parthenon.
This distinction between exterior spectacle and restricted interior explains the emphasis in Greek temple design on the outer colonnade, the peristyle. The columns, frieze, pediment sculpture, and the polished stone surfaces of the exterior were the public face of the temple, visible from across the sanctuary and from a distance through the city. The building was designed primarily to be seen from the outside, in three dimensions, as a freestanding sculptural object.
The Three Orders: Structural Principles and Regional Traditions
The Greek architectural orders — Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian — are systems that govern the proportional relationships between all elements of a colonnade: the column height and diameter, the capital form, the entablature above, and the frieze decoration. They are not arbitrary styles but evolved regional traditions, each with its own logic and aesthetic associations.
The Doric order developed in the mainland Greek and western colonial tradition (southern Italy and Sicily) from roughly the 7th century BC. Its defining characteristics are simplicity and strength: columns without bases, rising directly from the stylobate; capitals consisting of a plain circular echinus topped by a square abacus; and a triglyphs-and-metopes frieze above, in which the triglyph (a grooved block) alternates with the metope (a panel that was typically carved with relief sculpture). Doric proportions were debated and refined across two centuries, with early temples showing squat, powerful columns (a height-to-diameter ratio of perhaps 4:1) and classical-period temples moving toward more slender ratios (5.5:1 or 6:1 at the Parthenon). The Temple of Hephaistos in Athens, completed around 415 BC and one of the best-preserved Greek temples in existence, shows Doric in its mature classical form.
The Ionic order originated in the eastern Aegean and Asia Minor. Its columns stand on a base of horizontal moulded drums (typically a torus above a trochilus above another torus), giving a more articulated appearance than the Doric column rising directly from the platform. The Ionic capital is defined by its distinctive lateral volutes — spiral scrolls that emerge from the echinus and project to either side. The entablature lacks the triglyph-and-metope system; instead, the frieze is a continuous band, which allowed sculptors far more compositional freedom. The Ionic order is more slender and ornate than the Doric. The Erechtheion on the Acropolis of Athens, completed around 406 BC with its famous Porch of the Caryatids, is the most visited Ionic building in the world, though the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus — one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world — was the grandest, with a forest of 127 columns roughly 18 metres high.
The Corinthian order was the youngest of the three and differed primarily in its capital: a basket-shaped form covered with acanthus leaves and small volutes, far more ornate than either Doric or Ionic. In the classical period, Corinthian capitals appeared mainly on interior columns, as at the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae in Arcadia (roughly 420 BC, designed by Ictinus, who also worked on the Parthenon), where a single Corinthian column stood at the interior's south end. The order became standard for exterior colonnades in the Hellenistic period and was enthusiastically adopted by Roman architecture, which deployed it for some of its most ambitious buildings.
Visual Refinements: Subtle Corrections
One of the most remarkable aspects of Greek temple architecture is the systematic use of subtle geometric corrections to counteract optical illusions that perfectly straight geometry would produce. These refinements are most developed in the Parthenon, but they appear in varying degrees across major classical temples.
The stylobate (the top step of the platform) is not flat but curves upward at the centre by approximately 60 millimetres on the long side and slightly less on the short side. Without this correction, the platform would appear to sag. The columns are not perfectly vertical but lean very slightly inward — if their axes were extended upward, they would theoretically meet at a point roughly two kilometres above the temple. Corner columns are slightly thicker than inner columns, because a column seen against open sky appears thinner than one seen against a solid background; the thicker corner column compensates for this. The columns also display entasis — a slight outward swelling at approximately one-third of their height — which prevents the profile from appearing to pinch inward.
These corrections were achieved through the stone-cutting itself, meaning the quarried drums were shaped to depart fractionally from perfect geometry before ever being assembled. The scale of the refinements — sub-centimetre deviations in components weighing tonnes — demonstrates the extraordinary precision of the craftsmen and the seriousness with which Greek architects approached the problem of making stone appear geometrically perfect to the human eye.
Colour and the Greek Temple
The white marble Greek temple is a post-antique fiction. All Greek temples were painted, typically in bold reds, blues, and greens applied to the entablature, the capitals, the pediment figures, and the architectural ornament. The marble drums of the columns were left unpainted, as were the undecorated surfaces of the walls, but everything else was polychrome. Surviving traces of paint on sheltered surfaces at Aegina, Olympia, and the Acropolis confirm this, and detailed chemical analysis of the Parthenon sculptures has reconstructed specific pigment schemes in recent years.
The painted surfaces served two purposes. Functionally, the colour allowed the eye to distinguish the three-dimensional elements of the entablature from a distance — the alternating painted triglyphs and metopes were more legible in strong Mediterranean sunlight than unpainted stone. Aesthetically, the Greek temple in use was a very different visual object from the bleached ruin that inspired Neoclassical architecture from the 17th century onward. The idealized white marble architecture that influenced everything from the Capitol in Washington to the British Museum is a misreading of the original, produced by the selective survival of the stonework and the loss of the painted decoration.
The Temple in the Landscape
Greek sanctuaries were rarely enclosed within cities. The great Panhellenic sites — Olympia, Delphi, Delos, Nemea — were extra-urban gathering places accessible to the entire Greek world. Even urban sanctuaries like the Athenian Acropolis were architecturally distinct from the city below, set on a rock that separated them visually and physically. The relationship between temple and landscape was carefully considered: the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, completed around 440 BC, was positioned at the southernmost tip of Attica to be visible from the sea, a landmark for ships rounding the cape. The Temple of Aphaia on Aegina was sited on a ridge to command views across the Saronic Gulf. The oracle sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi was built into a nearly vertical slope below the Phaedriades cliffs, the natural drama of the setting reinforcing the sanctuary's reputation as the centre of the world.
