Visiting Ancient Ruins Responsibly

Every year, hundreds of millions of people visit ancient ruins and archaeological sites. The curiosity that draws them — the desire to stand where others stood thousands of years ago, to see the texture of the stone, to understand how people lived and died — is entirely legitimate and, at its best, a powerful force for the appreciation and protection of the past. But physical presence at fragile sites has costs, and those costs compound across millions of visitors in ways that individual travellers rarely see or feel. Understanding what those costs are, and how to reduce your own contribution to them, is the foundation of responsible site visiting.

Physical Damage: More Than Just 'Don't Climb the Ruins'

The most obvious form of visitor damage is direct physical contact: people touching, climbing, or leaning on ancient stone. Stone that has survived for centuries or millennia is not indestructible — it is, in most cases, gradually dissolving or flaking under the combined action of weather, temperature change, biological activity, and human contact. The oils and salts in human skin accelerate the degradation of limestone, marble, and fired clay surfaces. Frescoes and painted plaster are particularly vulnerable: even the moisture and carbon dioxide in breath can damage enclosed painted chambers, which is why the Lascaux Cave paintings in France necessitated the closure of the original cave in 1963 and the subsequent construction of progressively sophisticated replicas.

Foot traffic compresses soil and destroys the underground archaeology that lies beneath paths and open areas. At a site like Stonehenge, where the visitor path circles the stones on a gravel surface, the original practice of allowing visitors to walk among the stones was ended in 1977 precisely because compaction and scuffing were damaging the surface archaeology of the surrounding henge. Special access is still granted for solstice gatherings and private visits, subject to conditions. Wherever you can, stay on marked paths, even when an unmarked route through the site looks more interesting. The path exists because everything around it is more fragile.

Do Not Remove or Disturb Anything

Collecting 'souvenirs' from ancient sites — a fragment of pottery, a worked flint, a small stone — is illegal under the heritage laws of virtually every country in the world and causes real harm that accumulates with each individual act. A ceramic sherd lying on the surface of a site retains stratigraphic value: its position relative to other material tells archaeologists about occupation sequences, trading connections, and chronology. Removed from context, it becomes an inert object with no research value and contributes to a culture of casual extraction that shades into systematic looting. The same applies to moving any object at a site, even temporarily: putting a pottery fragment back in a slightly different position destroys the spatial relationship that makes it scientifically meaningful.

This principle extends to subtler interventions. Do not build cairns or stack stones at ancient sites. Do not carve or scratch inscriptions into ancient surfaces — a form of damage that has gone on since antiquity (Greek and Roman tourists left graffiti at Egyptian temples, many of which are now the oldest surviving examples of certain Greek and Latin letter forms, but modern graffiti is unambiguously destructive). Do not clear vegetation from a ruin wall you have found. Vegetation growing on masonry can be stabilising as well as damaging, and decisions about clearance are for conservation professionals to make with full knowledge of the site.

Photography Without Contact

Modern photography creates almost no physical damage if done without touching or climbing, but the social incentive to produce extraordinary images has generated a specific set of problems. At Machu Picchu, Instagram-driven behaviour including visitors positioning themselves on walls, ledges, and restricted areas for photographs has required the site to implement strict one-way circulation routes and station guards at every tempting climbing point. At Angkor's Ta Prohm, the fig tree roots engulfing the temple are an actively managed and fragile environment — the trees are supported and monitored by conservation teams — and visitors attempting to climb into the tree roots for photographs cause progressive damage.

At sites that prohibit flash photography in enclosed spaces, the rule is there because even relatively low-intensity repeated light exposure can fade pigments in frescoes and painted surfaces. Use available light or a low-intensity torch if permitted, never flash. At sites that prohibit photography altogether (a small number of sacred Indigenous sites, some extremely fragile painted shelters), respect the restriction.

Tourism Pressure and Carrying Capacity

Many of the world's most famous archaeological sites are receiving visitor numbers that exceed their long-term carrying capacity. Machu Picchu, Angkor, Pompeii, Stonehenge, Chichen Itza, and Petra are all managing — with varying success — the tension between access and preservation. The management responses include timed entry slots and pre-booked ticketing, one-way circulation routes, restricted zones, differential pricing to spread visits throughout the day, and in some cases hard limits on daily visitor numbers.

As a traveller, engaging honestly with these systems is part of responsible visiting. Buying tickets in advance rather than arriving and attempting to bypass queues, respecting closure times and restricted areas, and accepting that you may not see exactly the framing or experience you had imagined all contribute to keeping the site viable for future visitors. If a site operates a guide-only access system, as many sensitive Indigenous and archaeological sites in Australia, North America, and Africa do, the requirement is not bureaucratic obstruction — it is a mechanism for ensuring that visitors receive contextual information, move through the site appropriately, and do not inadvertently damage or enter areas that are not open.

Visiting Off-Peak and Off the Main Trail

One practical way to reduce your contribution to pressure at the most visited sites is to shift your visit temporally and spatially. Most major sites have peak and off-peak periods, and the difference in visitor density between an early morning opening visit in October and a midday visit in August is extreme. A guided sunrise visit to Angkor's temples or an early entry to Pompeii before the main crowds arrive gives a qualitatively different experience and places less strain on the site's management infrastructure.

Beyond the famous sites, there are thousands of lesser-visited ruins that offer equally rich encounters with the ancient past with far less pressure on both the visitor and the site. Leptis Magna in Libya is among the best-preserved Roman cities in the world and receives a fraction of the visitors of Pompeii. Choirokoitia in Cyprus, a Neolithic village of around 7000 BC, is UNESCO-listed and often nearly empty. Sbeitla in Tunisia, with its exceptional Roman forum, sees mainly specialist visitors. Engaging with Local Communities

Archaeological sites exist within living communities. The people who live near ancient ruins often have mixed relationships with the heritage in their vicinity: it may be a source of income from tourism, a source of restrictions on their own land use, a matter of ancestral connection and pride, or a target of frustration when conservation interests override local development needs. Responsible visiting means being conscious of this complexity.

Buying from local vendors, hiring local guides licensed by national heritage bodies (rather than using generic international tour operators who route money away from the community), respecting local religious and cultural protocols at sites that remain active — these practices have real economic and social effects. At some sites, heritage tourism is the primary economic driver of entire regions, and the quality of local service is directly connected to the quality of the visitor experience. Treating guides as experts — which the best of them are — rather than as service workers provides better information and contributes to valuing the knowledge and professional infrastructure that responsible site management depends on.

Heritage and Climate

Responsible site visiting in the 2020s also means being aware of the broader environmental context. Long-haul travel to visit ancient ruins has a significant carbon footprint. This is not a reason to avoid travel, but it is a reason to make it count: a careful itinerary that groups visits efficiently, stays longer in fewer places, and uses train travel where it is a viable alternative to flying, reduces the ratio of carbon cost to cultural value. Within some fragile landscapes, the cumulative effect of vehicle access — the dust, the surface compaction, the pollution — has real effects on the condition of exposed materials. At sites where horse or foot access is recommended over vehicle access, the recommendation is worth following.

The physical past is finite and non-renewable. Every fragment of ancient architecture that survives has done so against the odds, through the accidents of burial, dryness, remoteness, or deliberate conservation effort. The reasonable expectation of any visitor is to leave a site no worse than they found it — and ideally to leave having understood something that will make them more committed to its protection.
