What Epigraphy Is and Why It Matters

Epigraphy is the study of inscriptions — texts carved, painted, stamped, or scratched onto durable surfaces such as stone, metal, ceramic, and brick. It sits at the intersection of archaeology, linguistics, and history, and it is one of the primary tools through which ancient sites gain names, dates, and human voices. Without inscriptions, the Parthenon would still be an extraordinary building, but we would know nothing of the specific political decisions, financial accounts, and religious dedications that shaped its construction. Without the Rosetta Stone, Egyptian hieroglyphs might have remained undeciphered for generations longer. Without the trilingual inscription at Bisitun in Iran, the Old Persian cuneiform script would have remained mute.

Every inhabited site from antiquity — every forum, temple, tomb, and milliarium — was covered in writing. Ancient people carved texts with an intensity and permanence that reflects a deep belief in the authority of the written word in stone. Roman cities in particular were saturated with inscriptions: building dedications naming the emperor and magistrates responsible, honorary bases recording public careers, funerary stelae commemorating the dead, and boundary markers defining property and jurisdiction. The Mechanics of Ancient Inscription

Inscriptions on stone were produced by professional craftsmen working from a draft or, for important official texts, from a design approved by the commissioning authority. The layout was first marked out in chalk or charcoal on the stone face. For formal Roman inscriptions, letters were incised with a V-section cut using an iron chisel driven by a mallet, with the letter strokes typically finished with serifs — the horizontal finishing strokes at the ends of vertical elements — that help the eye track along the line and which were deeply embedded in the aesthetic tradition of Roman monumental writing.

The quality of letter-cutting varied enormously. Official imperial dedications on major public buildings in Rome or the provincial capitals were executed by skilled craftsmen at the peak of their trade: even spacing, consistent height, elegant proportions. Funerary inscriptions from smaller provincial towns show hurried cutting, abbreviations, and non-standard letter forms that reflect less expensive workshops or, in some cases, the patron's own hand. This variation is itself historically informative, indicating social status, geographic region, and time period with some precision.

Greek inscriptions followed different aesthetic conventions. The stoichedon style, prevalent in classical Athens from around the 5th century BC, arranged letters in perfectly aligned vertical and horizontal grids with no word breaks and no punctuation, so that the visual regularity of the grid took precedence over linguistic legibility. Later Hellenistic and Roman-period Greek inscriptions relaxed this system and moved toward conventions closer to those familiar from manuscripts.

Decipherment: Breaking Ancient Codes

Some of the most significant intellectual achievements in the history of archaeology have been the decipherment of lost writing systems. The process typically requires a bilingual or multilingual text, or a large enough corpus of inscriptions to allow statistical analysis of symbol frequency and distribution.

The decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs depended on the Rosetta Stone, found by French soldiers during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign in 1799 and containing a priestly decree of 196 BC inscribed in hieroglyphics, Demotic script, and Greek. Thomas Young made initial progress by identifying the phonetic nature of the royal cartouches, and Jean-François Champollion completed the decipherment in 1822 by recognising that the system was mixed: partly phonetic, partly logographic. The inscription was not intrinsically important — a routine priestly document — but its three-language format was the key that unlocked three thousand years of Egyptian written culture.

Cuneiform, the wedge-mark writing of Mesopotamia used by Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, Assyrian, and other languages across roughly three thousand years, was deciphered through the Bisitun inscription of Darius I (around 521–486 BC), carved 100 metres up a sheer cliff face in Media. Henry Rawlinson, a British officer, was lowered on ropes to copy the texts in the 1830s and 1840s. The Old Persian version, written in an alphabetic form of cuneiform, was deciphered first, which then provided a key to the parallel Babylonian text and opened the entire corpus of Mesopotamian literature.

Linear B, the Mycenaean Greek script used in palace administration from roughly 1450 to 1200 BC, was deciphered by architect Michael Ventris in 1952 without the benefit of a bilingual text, through a combination of structural analysis of the script and the inspired hypothesis that the underlying language might be an early form of Greek. The tablets at Knossos on Crete and Pylos in the Peloponnese that yielded Linear B turned out to record not literature or history but palace accounts: quantities of grain, bronze, and livestock. The mundane content was, paradoxically, more useful for linguists than narrative texts would have been.

Reading Inscriptions in the Field

For anyone visiting ancient sites, epigraphy provides a direct line to the people who lived there. At Pompeii, electoral notices painted on walls in red and black recommend candidates for the aedileship and duumvirate — local political offices — in language that sounds surprisingly modern. Graffiti scratched into plaster in Pompeii's insula walls record scores of voices: a student practising the alphabet, a soldier noting his garrison, a lover leaving a message of longing. One inscription near the amphitheatre records that a gladiatorial games sponsor promises nets will be sprinkled with perfume. Another simply says: 'Successus the weaver loves Iris the innkeeper's slave girl. She doesn't care for him at all. But he begs her to take pity on him. Written by his rival.'

At Ephesus in western Turkey, the caryatid porch of the Library of Celsus carries a Latin inscription recording that the building was endowed by Gaius Julius Aquila in memory of his father Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus, consul in AD 92, whose sarcophagus was placed in a chamber beneath the reading room. The inscription names the sum donated and the terms of the endowment — a piece of civic euergetism (benefaction) typical of prosperous provincial cities in the 2nd century AD.

At Delphi, the sanctuary accumulated honorary inscriptions over centuries, turning the precinct into a dense record of Greek interstate relations. Cities celebrated military victories, honoured their citizens, recorded peace treaties, and proclaimed sacred truces for the Panhellenic games — all in stone, all competing for the best positions near the Temple of Apollo. Walking through the remains of the sanctuary means reading a compressed political history of the classical Greek world.

Inscriptions and Dating

Epigraphy contributes directly to the dating of archaeological contexts and architectural phases. Imperial dedications that name the ruling emperor provide a terminus post quem — a date after which the structure must have been built. Letter forms change detectably over time: the angular, slightly rustic forms of early Roman inscriptions give way to the more regularised Trajanic and Hadrianic styles, and then to the declining quality and increasingly simplified forms of the later empire. Palaeographic dating can place an undated inscription within roughly a generation.
