Über Ruins World Map 🏛️

Ruins World Map collects the ruins of the world — abandoned abbeys and castles, deserted villages, derelict industry and the half-standing walls of buildings the centuries left behind.

Each ruin comes from OpenStreetMap's `historic=ruins` tag, mapped by people drawn to abandoned places. Ruins can be unstable and are often on private land, so check access and take care if you visit.

Wer steckt hinter dieser Seite?

Ruins World Map wird von Emil Björk gebaut und gepflegt, einem unabhängigen Entwickler aus Schweden. Die Seite entstand aus einer Leidenschaft für Karten, Reisen und offene Daten; beruflich kommt er aus der IT-Beratung.

So funktioniert es

Every point is fetched from the OpenStreetMap Overpass API, deduplicated, tagged by country and stored as a static GeoJSON file — no database, instant to load. Click any point to see a description from Wikipedia, a photo from Wikimedia Commons (or Mapillary as a fallback) and, where available, its Google rating.

Aktualität der Daten

The dataset is automatically refreshed once a month from OpenStreetMap via a scheduled GitHub Action, so the map stays current as the world is mapped.
